The In-Country Program on Developing E-Learning Contents in TVET, a collaboration among CPSC, Fiji's Ministry of Education (MOE) and Public Service Commission (PSC) was held from April 10 to 14, 2012 at the University of South Pacific (USP) in Suva, Republic of Fiji. In the opening ceremony, Mrs. Iva Tavai, Deputy Secretary of the PSC representing Hon. Mr. Parmesh Chand, PSC Permanent Secretary gave words of gratitude to CPSC for conducting this very timely program on E-Learning for the benefit of educational institutions in Fiji. She wished enthusiastic participation of the 28 participants in the program.
The nominated participants represented various government schools, universities and colleges as well as different government ministries and centers. The E-Learning Program was designed to equip participants with knowledge and skills in E-Learning development to enable them to: (a) explain concepts and practices of ICT-based education, (b) discover different E-Learning building blocks, (c) know best practices to plan the E-Learning development stages, (d) learn to use different tools to design E-Learning assets, and (e) develop an E-Learning Prototype with actual learning contents.
Overall management and supervision of the program was under the helm of Dr. Mohammad Naim Yaakub, CPSC Director General, while program coordination was carried out by Mr. Michael Montero, CPSC E-Learning Consultant and former ICT Officer. Local coordination was handled by Mrs. Seruawaia Raile from the Ministry of Education of Fiji. USP’s Learning Resource Manager Mr. Dhiraj Bhartu was invited to give a lecture on how USP carries out its E-Learning Programs.
The program consisted of different instructional methodologies like special lectures, interactive presentations, multimedia viewing, hands-on software tools training, computer practice sessions, study tours, tasks, project work and online assessment.
The Permanent Secretary for Education, National Heritage, Culture and Arts, Youth and Sports of Fiji’s MOE, Dr. Brij Lal graced the closing ceremonies, as well as Dr. Naim. Dr. Lal gave an encouraging speech on the use of Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) for Fiji’s progress in its educational programs and thanked CPSC for conducting such a timely program. Dr. Naim likewise expressed thanks to the ministry for their continued support to CPSC. He also encouraged the participants to continue and implement E-Learning programs after the course to fully grasp the potential of ICT and even move on to mobile learning.
Participants were awarded certificates for their hard work on their E-Learning prototypes and for their active participation during the five-day program.
