Background

The establishment of Cooperative societies were created long before the advent of the fair trade movement to help workers improve their livelihoods and protect their interests. Cooperatives are organizations of people who have the same needs. Cooperatives are operating in an environment that requires exceptional or transformational leadership qualities and changed management systems for the success of associations of cooperatives today.

Transforming federations requires change. One of the perceived bottlenecks in effecting change in federations relates to the lack of change leaders and a lack of capacity to develop a vision and implement change. Transformative leaders need to have a clear vision, a solid target objectives for the federation and have the strong motivation and leadership skills to drive change.

Leadership is about managing change and guiding growth in fluid environments. Leadership requires a ‘change capable culture’ that gives space to lead. Moreover, to sustainably grow, federations or cooperatives are shifting from viewing leadership development as a “nice to have” to a “need to have”. Leadership development programs are mission critical to federations’ or cooperatives’ organizational success.



Focus

The webinar session is designed to provide a pIatform for reflecting on the principles of cooperatives/federations and discuss how the leadership and management dynamics and skills can contribute to achieving the objectives/targets of the cooperative/federation.



Objectives

The program aims for participants to:

  • reflect on the principles of cooperatives/federations;
  • apply methods on how the leadership and management dynamics and skills can contribute to achieving the objectives/targets of the cooperative/federation;
  • Identify issues and goals of managing change and improving adaptability through managing skills and strategies;

Resource Speakers

Dr. Ramhari Lamichhane is the first Nepali and the 11th Director General of CPSC. He is also the concurrent President of Asia Pacific Accreditation and Certification Commission (APACC). He has 30 years of experience in TVET starting as an instructor up to becoming the CEO of Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT) in Nepal. He served as Project Manager in ADB projects and Program Coordinator in Swiss Development Cooperation (SDC) funded projects. He was a key member in formulating the TVET Policy of Nepal in 2007 and 2012.

He is a dynamic leader, certified project assessor, strategic planner, experienced project manager, TVET Institution Quality Assessor, TVET Expert, and a seasoned manager, attested by the awards received such as the Prabal Gorkha Dakshin Bahu IV from the Late King Birendra Bira Bikram Shah Dev and Global Educational Leadership Award by the World Education Congress; scholarship from Ryutaro Hashimoto Foundation, Japan; and Humphrey Fellowship from Fullbright Foundation, USA.

He has presented papers in a number of international conferences and meetings on TVET. He has authored and co-authored publications on TVET in various thematic areas - accessibility, greening, entrepreneurship, financing, equality, and image building. Dr. Lamichhane earned his PhD and MPhil in Education Leadership from Kathmandu University in Nepal. He has a degree in Educational Administration, Planning and Policy from Peabody College/Vanderbilt University, Tennessee, USA.

Md. Kamrul Hasan Tarafder is the Co-Founder of ASA Philippines Foundation which he started right after his UNDP assignment in August 2004. He served as Chief Consultant of UNDP Philippines for Microfinance (Sep 1998 to June 2004). He has extensive experience in South and South East Asian Countries in establishing microfinance system. Attended many national and international seminars on Microfinance as resource person in US, UK, Canada, Australia, China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Japan, the Philippines and in Bangladesh.

He is profoundly devoted assisting people in conflict zone and war victims through relief and rehabilitation efforts in Marawi in Mindanao 2017. Reviving enterprises, building capacities of the individuals of conflict impacted zone at the post conflict period. He is also extensively involved natural calamity impacted areas like Haiyan, providing psychosocial support, financial assistance through grants and interest free loan until the calamity victims are ready to takeoff with business finance and leading to a normal life. He is involved in social development since 1982 and exclusively in microfinance field since 1993. Served as Deputy General Manager and in various capacity with ASA Bangladesh (1993-1998). He sits in the board of several national and international level institutions both non-profit and for-profit companies mostly on microfinance, academic research, social development organization and social-enterprise.

He earned a Master in Entrepreneurship with distinction from Asian Institute of Management in Manila and a Bachelor of Arts under University of Dhaka. In February 2020 he was conferred with the prestigious AIM Alumni Association’s “Triple A Award” for his leadership to the extraordinary success of ASA Philippines Foundation.
