The Colombo Plan Staff College (CPSC) extends its greetings of peace to the Republic of Maldives in commemoration of its 59th Independence Day this July 26, 2024.

History

Maldives was governed as an independent Islamic sultanate from 1153 to 1968. It then became under the control of Britain from 1887 to 1965 after the Sultan of Maldives signed a contract with the British Governor of Ceylon on December 16, 1887. This had turned Maldives into a British protectorate, making them lose their sovereignty over foreign affairs and policy.

Like other countries, having independence was significant for Maldives as it enabled the country to govern its own economy and achieve development. After nearly 80 years, Maldives was granted full autonomy on July 26, 1965 when Prime Minister Ibrahim Nasir signed the agreement for independence with the British. Maldives also gained membership at the United Nations on September 21, 1965.

Celebrations

In an earlier announcement made by the Ministry of Dhivehi Language, Culture, and Heritage, the slogan for this year’s celebration of Independence Day is “Maldivians’ own nation, Maldivians’ freedom.”

In the ceremony, some government individuals will be honored with awards in recognition of their dedication and commitment to their country. There will also be a flag-hoisting ceremony and military parades organized by the Maldives National Defense Force (MDNF) and the student cadets.
