India gained its independence from British colonial rule in 1947. This pivotal moment in history was the culmination of decades of struggles and perseverance of the nation. Mahatma Gandhi, one of the notable freedom fighters of India, advocated for peaceful protests and nonviolent resistance in ending British dominance, which prompted the Indian Independence Act in 1947.

Prior to British rule, the English East India company also exercised its control over the land of India in 1757 which persisted for 100 years. This was followed directly by British rule until 1947. In the same year, Pakistan also gained their independence from the British when the partition of the subcontinent into two countries, India and Pakistan, was finally settled.
