Background

Start-up incubation and entrepreneurship programs at universities provide fertile ground for innovation by utilizing academic knowledge and promoting economic growth. Educational institutions are the best places for establishing start-ups because of its research laboratories, qualified personnel and experienced faculty as well as industrial linkages. These universities also facilitate connections to funding sources through grants, competitions, and venture capital networks. The dynamic culture in the academic space promotes creativity and cooperation which enables the students and faculty to transform a revolutionary concept into products. Furthermore, strong engagement with the industry increases the opportunities for academic research to be used in practical applications and commercialization.

However, these opportunities come with several challenges. One common challenge is securing sustainable funding and the intricacy of commercialization processes. While academic knowledge is abundant, it is not enough in teaching practical entrepreneurship skills like risk management and scaling. Some factors within the institution may also affect the innovation process of the students and faculty engaging in entrepreneurship. With this, strong institutional support, simplification of procedures, and implementing effective entrepreneurship training programs can help in addressing these issues.

As a way forward, we invite you to join us in this international webinar as we explore how start-up incubations and entrepreneurship contribute to the upsurge and relevance of the TVET sector. The sessions will focus on the following areas:

  • Discuss organizational structure required for successful incubation
