The Colombo Plan Staff College (CPSC) family extends its warm wishes to its member countries in celebration of Pongal (also known as harvest festival) this year.

May this harvest season bring you an abundance of blessings, success, and happiness into your homes! We wish you and families a joyous celebration of Pongal this year.

The Pongal festival this year 2025 falls from January 14 to January 16. It is annually celebrated by Hindus and Tamil communities to thank the Sun God, “Surya Bhagawan” for the blessing of the bountiful harvest. Pongal also marks the end of the winter solstice and the beginning of the Tamil month of Thai. Countries like India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and Singapore celebrate this festival as a tribute to the harvest season.

The three-day festival includes the following practices: Bhogi festival is reserved for throwing away old belongings and welcoming new things on the eve of festival. Thai Pongal (Day 1) is the main day of celebration where families gather to prepare a special dish "Pongal" with freshly harvested rice, sugarcane, and lentils. Mattu Pongal (Day 2) is dedicated for showing gratitude to cattle and farm animals for their contribution to agriculture. Kaanum Pongal (Day 3) is a time for families and friends to reunite during this celebration.
